As the Controller, your tasks will include planning and directing all accounting operational functions, managing the accumulation and consolidation of financial information for internal and external financial statements, assessing accounting and internal control systems, and guiding departmental staff. Based in the Suffolk, Virginia area, this opening for a Controller is a permanent position.Key responsibilities- Direct finance department activities, such as accounts payable, billings & collections, and payroll- Evaluate, apply and refine policies, procedures, controls and most methodologies- Inspect deliverables of self and team to ensure that they meet client expectations- Drive the timing for monthly billing and other cash management techniques to ensure the timely cash collection- Perform tasks associated with month-end and year-end close of income statement and balance sheet, account reconciliations & G/L analysis- Complete tasks beyond formal job responsibilities- Manage the creation of and monthly monitoring of the annual budget and forecasts- Work closely with executive team and partners to ensure that firm-wide operation is efficient and effective- Support Finance Department initiatives, such as software and systems implementation and other departmental or firm-wide improvements, with research, planning, and implementation, as required- Handle daily cash management and produce cash-flow reports, calculating cash needs at weekly and monthly intervals- Present executive committee and partners with monthly financial reportsRequirements- Demonstrated ability to build and deliver effective presentations to audiences with wide-ranging backgrounds- Ability to meet deadlines- Internal Control experience- Foundational knowledge in Policies And Procedure- Prepare Financial Statements experience- Practical knowledge of Approved Budgets- Budget management experience highly preferred- Demonstrated knowledge of Annual Budget- Adeptness in Analyze Financial Statements- Earlier work involving auditing- Solid understanding of GAAP Accounting- General familiarity with Annual Operating Budget- Command of GASB- Background working with Annual Internal Audit- Outstanding technology, analytics and management experience required- The ideal candidate will be highly-skilled with exceptional analytical, quantitative and social skills- Attention to detail and proven ability to follow standard procedures is a requirement- Prior work done in public accounting is desired- Excellent written, verbal and social communication skills- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including as a Controller preferred- BA/BS in Accounting, Finance, Economics or other business related field- Self-starter with efficient time management and organizational skills- Advanced credentials such as a Masters of Business Administration / MBA or Certified Public Accountant / CPA are preferred- Ability to thrive in a dynamic, high pressure environment, to prioritize deals and adapt to quick changes while remaining diligent
